Through The World of Spray Roses, we highlight the people who keep the floral world moving, from growers to wholesalers, florists to event designers. This month, we caught up with Gayle, Digital Manager at Tom Brown Wholesale, to talk about 50 years in business, the rise of spray roses, and what it’s really like behind the scenes of a busy UK wholesaler.
1. Who is Tom Brown Wholesale?
We’re a family-run flower, plant, and sundries wholesaler based in Southeast London. We’ve been part of the floral world for 50 years, supplying some of the most talented florists across London and the Southeast.
Our customer base now stretches to over 1,300 florists, from iconic hotels like Claridge’s and The Lanesborough to bustling high street shops, event florists, students, and home-based creatives. It’s a real privilege to support such a diverse and inspiring community.
2. Do you serve customers across the UK?
We’ve grown far beyond London. Tom started with van sales across the Southeast, and today, with our webshop, next-day delivery, and a brilliant team of drivers, we reach florists across the region and beyond.
With our sister wholesalers, Marilliam Flowers in Huddersfield and The Flower Bank in Carlisle, we now support thousands of florists nationwide. What began as one man and a van is now a family of wholesalers serving customers across the UK.
3. What’s your biggest seller?
It changes with the seasons, but roses, especially spray roses, always hold a top spot. They’re incredibly versatile, perfect for everything from dainty bridal bouquets to large floral arches.
4. This year marks your 50th birthday. Tell us about that milestone.
Yes, we’re turning 50! The business began in 1975 with Tom, a van, and a whole lot of determination. Since then, it’s grown thanks to the hard work of staff, the support of suppliers, and the loyalty of our customers.
Still being here as an independent and family-run business half a century later is something we’re really proud of.
5. Your birthday campaign “WTF: Who’s Turning Fifty?” was a cheeky gamble. How has it been received?
It felt bold but also very us. We take flowers and service seriously, but we’ve always had a sense of humour. The campaign leaned into that, and customers loved it. The gifts, the rollout, the cheekiness, it’s made the anniversary even more special. We can’t wait to celebrate properly at our open day in October.
6. Have you noticed a rise in demand for spray roses?
Definitely, spray roses are delicate and romantic but also practical, with multiple blooms per stem; they offer value without compromising on impact. They’re especially popular for weddings and events. Small but mighty, they’re always in demand.
7. Do you have a favourite spray rose?
It’s impossible to choose just one! Majolica was a staple when I worked as an event florist, but now I get to see so many varieties. Recently, I’ve been wowed by Sweety and #New Look from Voorn. They’re unique, full of character, and so exciting to see in designs.
Gayle’s passion for the industry, her insight into the trends, and her love for spray roses reflect what makes wholesalers like Tom Brown such an essential part of the floral community. At The World of Spray Roses, we’re proud to share her story and to see how spray roses continue to inspire florists across the UK.
Make sure you keep your eyes peeled, as rumour has it, you may find some of our Spray Rose magazines available, and you’ll find a selection of our blooms on display.
Thank you, Gayle, we are really looking forward to celebrating with you and congratulations on the big birthday!
